Today I had the privilege of speaking at the Etihad Stadium on behalf of THE MEDICAL MEDIATION FOUNDATION (MMF) , as part of a masterclass for new paediatric intensive care consultants on ‘Navigating Conflict on PICU’.
Arabella arrives at the Etihad Stadium to discuss medical mediation on PICU
I was invited to share how medical mediation on PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) works, and the value it can bring – particularly in preventing distressing legal proceedings when there’s disagreement about treatment.
The panel was discussing ‘Navigating Conflict on PICU’
We explored a case I had mediated involving a child on PICU, and were incredibly fortunate to be joined by family members who generously shared their experience of the mediation process.
It was great to be there alongside others involved in supporting this wonderful family – and to meet Weightmans‘ Kirsty Stuart in person at last.
How can medical mediation on PICU support professionals and families?:
➡️ Restoring trust and communication
➡️ Talking about the child and how they are currently
➡️ Clarifying treatment options and discussing concerns
➡️ Planning discharge and home care / community nursing / hospice care
➡️ Parallel planning (e.g. what happens if child improves/deteriorates)
➡️ Comfort care, ceilings of treatment, DNACPR/respect forms
➡️ Perspectives of wider family, religious advisers, advocates and/or legal representatives
➡️ Exploring legal processes if court may be necessary, or ‘narrowing issues’ for judicial decision
➡️ Agreeing referrals (e.g. clinical ethics, second opinions)
➡️ Agreeing on the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment
➡️ Discussing ways to make end of life care as family centred as possible
