Pivot to a future focus

A gentle, practical session on moving from stuckness to possibility in difficult situations

When we’re living with an ongoing problem, a difficult relationship or a painful situation, it is very easy for our thinking to become anchored in what has gone wrong – or what still feels unresolved.

We replay what happened.
We analyse what should have been different.
We worry about what might happen next.

And without realising it, we can become stuck in a past- or present-focused loop.

This live Peaceable session is about learning how to pivot your attention gently and safely towards what you want instead – without denying the reality of what has been difficult.


A different way of shifting your thinking

In the session, Pivot to a Future Focus, we will explore a simple but powerful idea known as pendulation – moving your attention intentionally between what feels unwanted and what you would like more of.

Rather than forcing yourself to “think positive”, you’ll be invited to work with two very honest and human questions:

What don’t I want here?
What do I want here?

This creates a small but meaningful shift – from being held by the problem, to becoming curious about your preferred future.


Moving beyond the past and present

We will also gently explore a classic future-focused reflection that helps many people loosen their grip on what feels stuck:

“If a miracle had solved this problem while I was asleep, what would I now notice?”

Not as a fantasy.

But as a practical way of helping your brain begin to notice:

  • what would be different
  • how you would be behaving differently
  • what others might be doing differently around you
  • what would tell you that things were moving in a better direction

This kind of question helps shift attention away from what has already happened – and towards what could realistically begin to change.


What this session is for

The ‘Pivot to a Future Focus’ webinar is especially helpful if you:

  • feel stuck in a difficult interpersonal situation
  • notice yourself going over the same problem again and again
  • are dealing with ongoing conflict, uncertainty or emotional strain
  • want a kinder, calmer way of moving forward
  • would like simple tools you can use in everyday conversations and decisions

You don’t need any background in coaching, mediation or psychology.

Everything is offered in a gentle, accessible and practical way.


What we will explore together

In a calm and supportive space, you’ll be invited to:

  • practise shifting your focus from the unwanted to the wanted
  • explore how small changes in attention can open up new choices
  • notice how your thinking changes when you look towards possibility rather than difficulty
  • reflect on what a realistic, hopeful next step might look like for you

You are welcome to reflect quietly and privately throughout.

There is no pressure to speak or share.


What this session is – and isn’t

This ‘Pivot to a Future Focus’ session is:

  • gentle and reflective
  • practical and grounded
  • suitable for real-life situations and relationships

It is not therapy.

It is simply an opportunity to explore a different way of relating to problems and to your own thinking.


About the session

The webinar is facilitated by me, Arabella Tresilian, drawing on my work as an accredited mediator and communication specialist supporting people through emotionally complex and high-impact conversations – particularly in health, care and family contexts.

My work is shaped by a strong commitment to compassionate, future-focused and human-centred approaches to conflict and communication.
